The ASTE (Advanced Systems and Telecommunications Equipment) Programme consists of a number of technology developments throughout all aspects of telecommunications via satellite. These projects include development of novel payload subassemblies, promotion of personal mobile satellite communications, development of emergency management based communications systems and also development & demonstration of several multimedia telematics applications.

ARTES-5 est connu sous le nom de Programme de systèmes et équipements de télécommunications de technologie avancée (ASTE). L'objectif des activités menées dans le cadre du programme ASTE consiste à développer des technologies destinées à de futurs programmes de télécommunications par satellites et à renforcer la compétitivité de l'industrie sur les marchés commerciaux. Le programme couvre quatre types de missions : services de retransmission de données, services de télédiffusion fixes et mobiles, services mobiles et de navigation; systèmes de télécommunications et matériel commun.
